Headache Relief Tips: Dr. Broskoskie – Results Chiropractic



Tips for Headache Relief:  Dr. Brian Broskoskie at Results Chiropractic  With the changes of season, vacation stress and super hot weather, headache sufferers are noticing greater symptoms.  Here are some tips to help relieve a headache.

First of all, don’t get a headache.  Find out what is wrong with your body and get it corrected.  Headaches are very far from normal and are a sign that something is not functioning properly.  Restore balance to your body and you should not have a headache and no need to read the rest of this.  Call our office today for help discovering how upper cervical chiropractic care  has helped headache sufferers correct the problem (302) 408 0000.

Second, be wary of people who tell you to put pressure underneath your head and the top of the neck.  This will actually push the top vertebra forward and cause greater damage.  It may feel good initially, but it is extremely dangerous.

Third tip: when you notice a headache starting, put some ice on the back of your neck.  Since, headaches stem from where the top few vertebra connect to your head, ice will help reduce swelling to that area.  Again, be careful not to put any forward pressure on that area.

Fourth tip:  there are pressure points beginning at the middle of your forehead, and then moving back along the midline an inch at a time until you get to the back of your head.  Hold these points for 1 minute.  Do not go to your neck.  You can repeat this every hour.

Fifth tip:  stop clenching your teeth.  Relax your jaw and try not to let your teeth even touch throughout the day.  Dentists call this “bruxing’, and it can take several months to change the habit.

Sixth tip:  shoulder tension is a significant factor in the beginning of a headache (it is actually a symptom).  Let your shoulders drop and focus on relaxing the musculature.  This may allow your body the opportunity to halt the oncoming headache.  Usually shoulder tension is a result of a severe neck misalignment and the resulting guarding mechanism.

Seventh tip: when noticing a headache starting, do a forehead massage.  Massage between the eyes. Softly touch and rub the eyes and above the eyes where they meet the nose.  Be careful along the boney ridge of bone above the eye, do it too hard and you get a black eye.  You can’t be too soft, but you can be too heavy.  A bag of frozen peas or corn kept in the freezer can feel very nice on your eyes also.

Last tip:  breathe.  Slow and deep abdominal breathing with your eyes closed for 20 minutes can work wonders to relax and revitalize your body.  Put one hand on your chest and one on your belly.  The belly hand must move first on inhalation and last on exhalation.  If you can breathe so that only the belly hand moves, that would be awesome.

As I stated earlier, the best way to avoid and relieve a headache is to not have a headache.  Some people may think that they have to live with it, and that could not be farther from the truth.  You don’t have to have headaches, nor do you have to sacrifice your health in order to get rid of headaches.  You have a choice. What Exactly Is Whiplash

whiplash (1)When you think of whiplash, most people immediately think “car accident.” But a fall or many types of repetitive movement may also cause whiplash. Sometimes the symptoms from whiplash take days or even weeks to manifest themselves, but the damage it causes can last for years.

What exactly is whiplash? It’s a condition in which the joints in the back of the neck, joints that usually slide easily over one another, are forced together, causing damage to the nerves, discs, ligaments and muscles all around them.

The symptoms? Generally, these include headaches, dizziness, neck and arm pain, decreased attention span, an inability to focus and fatigue. These symptoms can be both very painful and downright debilitating to the whiplash sufferer.

It helps to come into our practice immediately for a thorough examination if you have been involved in an accident and suspect that you might be the victim of a whiplash injury. Treating Sacroiliac Sprain and Spasm

Increased outdoor activity during the summer months tends to escalate the number of overuse and traumatic injuries seen in chiropractic practices. One of the most common of these is sacroiliac joint syndrome (SIJD). The SI joint is susceptible to traumatic (sudden, forceful injury) and inflammatory conditions. Common causes of injury are slips or falls; however, it also can be injured by overuse. Overuse can result from frequent and prolonged bending or sitting for extended periods of time. Occasionally, intense hip pain and spasm can arise from doing something as simple as bending over to pick up a pencil or tie a shoe.

Injuries of this type can produce ligamentous laxity and allow painful abnormal motion. SI joint hypermobility pain can also be caused by leg length discrepancy, gait abnormalities, prolonged vigorous exercise, and trauma. In any case, the resulting dysfunction disrupts the kinetic chain in which the sacroiliac joint is a key link.

sisprainspasm_Fig1Even though the most powerful muscles in the body surround the SIJ, these muscles influence SI motion only indirectly (left). However, the effect the SIJ has on these muscles can be profound. The piriformis, iliopsoas, gluteals, quadratus lumborum, and hamstrings can all be affected to various degrees. With SIJD, these muscles can become tense or spastic, ceasing to perform effectively. This further compromises gait and can lead to development of spinal dysfunction, hip bursitis and leg pain.

Being a transitional structure (below), the SIJ can be thought of as either the bottom of the spine or the top of the leg; it really functions as both. The joint is not very large, especially considering the forces which cross it. What accounts for its stability are its irregular joint surfaces, wedge-like shape of the sacrum, and most importantly, the binding ligaments – the SIJ ligament complex (bottom). These ligaments, considered the strongest ligaments in the body, function like the cables of a suspension bridge. In order for the joint to function properly, each “cable” needs to provide a certain degree of tension and support; each plays a role in bridging the spine to the lower extremities, thus providing the stability necessary for fluid gait and normal body function.

sisprainspasm_Fig2In order to successfully treat SIJD, several factors need to be taken into consideration and properly addressed. These include altered joint mechanics, muscle dysfunction, and ligament incompetence. Chiropractic adjustments serve to re-align the body. Various deep tissue and joint mobilizations, some of which utilize the principle of indirect muscle effect on SIJ motion (muscle energy) help to realign the pelvis and spine.

When possible, self-mobilization techniques are taught, enabling the client to restore alignment on their own. Instruction in body mechanics and activity avoidance helps prevent recurrent painful episodes.

But, it is important for the chiropractor to restore proper muscle length, tone, strength and coordination. To fully re-train coordination, the brain must re-learn aberrant movement patterns and this is not always an easy fix given our flexion-addicted society. Through the Law of Facilitation, the myelin sheath that covers the neurons, over time has re-wired those faulty movement patterns as normal. So, following each deep tissue, myofascial release, and joint stretching session, the client is instructed in specific exercises, including a regimented stretch-strengthen program. This is an essential piece of the puzzle folks.

sisprainspasm_fig3Tight or spastic muscles inhibit progress and are many times responsible for perpetuating the dysfunction. Aqua-therapy is also a useful means of initiating motion recovery and restoring normal movement patterns, particularly when excessive deconditioning or pain is an issue. Although restoring normal function can be extremely challenging, it is never impossible.

Golf and Low Back Pain

Golf1Because the golf swing involves an array of complex unilateral body movements, at some point virtually every golfer will experience an acute injury or chronic back pain.

Here are some recent stats:

– 53% of male and 45% of female golfers suffer low back pain.

– As many as 30% of professional golfers are playing injured.

– 33% of golfers are over the age of 50.

– Playing golf and another sport increases chance of injury by 40 percent.

Researchers conclude that a majority of injuries affecting male golfers originate in the low back and are related to improper swing mechanics and/or the repetitive nature of the swing.

Amateurs are typically injured due to improper swing mechanics whereas professionals suffer overuse injuries as they obsessively perform repeated strokes. When a high velocity rotary force couples with trunk side-bending (the crunch factor), the golfer’s spine and paravertebral tissues take a beating. It’s no wonder low back pain (LBP) is the most common myoskeletal complaint among golfers.


Golf2To hit the ball a great distance, the body must have the ability to rotate into and maintain a wide arc throughout the swing. Manual therapy techniques that increase range of hip turn allow a decrease in the amount of shoulder turn, thus reducing the amount of trunk flexion and sidebending during the downswing.

Sounds easy to fix? Maybe…BUT, before jumping in and mobilizing the adhesive hip capsules, the doctor must first restore proper secondary curves to the cervical and, particularly… the lumbar spine. Too much or too little curve creates excessive torsional and compressive loads at the thoracolumbar and lumbosacral junctions.

Fortunately, there are usually only a couple of (non-surgical) things that lead to a golfer’s back pain:

  1. muscle imbalances, and,
  2. joint dysfunction.

One must rule these out first before a chiropractor comes up with some rare and scary diagnosis. The myoskeletal approach begins by correcting lower crossed muscle imbalance patterns and then assessing and restoring joint play to fixated lumbar and thoracic facet joints.


Golf3Developed by the legendary neurologist and rehab specialist Vladimir Janda MD, the lower crossed syndrome is simply a grouping of weak muscles and overactive or tight muscles that produce a predictable low back movement pattern that can lead to injury (left)

Janda’s EMG research found that a significant number of people developed a distinct pattern of muscle imbalance due to prolonged static posture. He noted that when a muscle is left in a shortened or contracted state for an extended period of time, it produces reciprocal inhibition, i.e., reflex weakening of muscles on the opposite side of the body.

Many of our ‘weekend warrior’ golfers sit at their job for hours on end in a flexed position.

Day-by-day the hip flexors tighten and shorten causing reciprocal inhibition which neurologically inhibits glute-max…a critical stabilizer of the hip during the golf swing.

Unable to help stabilize the pelvis, the weakened gluteals causes the brain to recruit synergistic muscles like the hamstrings and lumbar erectors to assist the glutes in hip extension.

When golfers present with excessive lumbar lordosis, a flabby protruding abdomen and a flat butt, we know the first order of business is restoring length to the hip flexors and lumbar spine and then hands-on fast-paced spindle-stim techniques to ‘wake-up’ the weak gluteals.

It’s easy to spot ‘lower crossed’ golfers by observing their set-up posture from down-the-line. The swayed low back forms an anterior curve with the convex thoracics often referred to as the “S-posture”.

Oddly, some golfers intentionally stick their butts out because some golf pro told them they could generate more power on the downswing. The truth is, once they arch their back and stick their butt out at set up, they lose the ability to ‘hinge’ from the hips and are no longer able to keep the spine in a neutral stable posture. Core stability is lost and the joints are subjected to undue strain and possible intervertebral disc damage.


Humans rarely move one muscle at a time along a single plane. Modern science tells us that the brain does not recognize individual muscle activities because it doesn’t need to. Instead, the brain looks at movement patterns and creates coordination between all muscles needed. Since the primary function of synovial joints is to transmit stress when stabilized by muscle contraction, without this foundation, muscles and enveloping fascia are unable to achieve maximum leverage to move the body through a smooth golf swing. Because synovial joint stability relies on proper length/strength balance of surrounding connective tissues (muscles, ligaments, para-vertebral fascia and joint capsules), anything that disrupts this delicate balance may cause damage and nociception. If pain is associated with loss of joint flexibility, the brain may decide to ‘splint’ the area with protective spasm.

High Heels and Back Pain

high-heels1For over a century, the biomechanical effects of heels in everything from running shoes to stilettos has puzzled researchers and fired controversy. When standing barefoot, the perpendicular line of the straight body column creates a ninety degree angle with the floor (Fig. 1A). On a two-inch heel, were the body a rigid column and forced to tilt forward, the angle would be reduced to seventy degrees, and to fifty-five degrees on a three-inch heel (Fig. 1B) Thus, for the body to maintain an erect position, a whole series of joint adjustments (ankle, knee, hip, spine, head) are required to regain and retain one’s erect stance and equilibrium.

The slope or slant of the heel, rear to front, is called the ‘heel wedge angle’. The higher the heel, the greater the angle. On the bare foot there is no wedge angle. The bottom of the heel is on a level one hundred and eighty degrees, with body weight shared equally between heel and ball. Inside the heeled shoe, the wedge angle shifts body weight forward so that on a low heel, body weight is shared forty percent heel, sixty percent ball; and on a high heel ninety percent ball and ten percent heel.


Under these conditions the step sequence is no longer heel-to-ball- to toes and push-off, as with the bare foot. With heels two or more inches in height, little weight is borne by the heel of the foot causing the push-off phase to arise almost wholly from the ball (Fig. 2). In this reflex adjustment, scores of body parts — bones, ligaments and joints, muscles and tendons — head to foot must instantly change position. If these adjustments are sustained over prolonged periods via habitual use of higher heels, the strains and stresses become chronic, causing or contributing to compensatory strain patterns ascending up the kinetic chain.


In the recent edition of ‘The Journal of Injury, Function and Rehabilitation‘, a research team compared the effects on knee, hip, and ankle joint motions of running barefoot versus modern running shoes. Sixty-eight healthy young adult runners who currently utilize modern running shoes for training were selected.  None of the participants had a history of musculoskeletal injury and they each ran an average of 15 miles per week. The experiment was designed so participants ran on a treadmill linked to a motion analysis device. They each engaged in a short treadmill run session with running shoes, and in an identical short session  barefoot.

high-heels-tendonWhile some manual therapy techniques such as foot and ankle mobilization and structural alignment provide temporary relief from gait-induced distress symptoms (Fig. 3), long-term, they are largely ineffectual in re-establishing natural gait. Why? Because natural gait is biomechanically impossible for any shoe-wearing person. The shoe’s elevated heel shortens the Achilles tendon and tightens calf muscles sometimes leading to conditions such as plantar fasciitis and heel pain (Fig. 4).

high-heels-sssThe heeled shoe “steals” much of the body’s antigravity propulsive power by weakening the fascial stirrup and leg muscles (Fig. 5). This not only places more stress on them to achieve needed propulsion (loss of ground reaction force), but power must be borrowed from elsewhere — knees, thigh muscles, hips, and trunk. Both tendons, ligaments and muscles are, of course, vital to step propulsion and gait stamina — which may help explain the performance dominance of marathon runners from nations where the barefoot state is common from infancy to adulthood.

Let’s start with the basics. A nerve is like a wire. A wire is usually made of copper and wrapped in a thermoplastic coating for insulation.  A nerve is wrapped in a myelin sheath for insulation. A nerve sends signals (electrochemical) to and from the area sensed to the brain and spinal cord.

A pinched nerve can occur at several sites in your body. A   herniated disc in your lower spine, for example, may put pressure on a  nerve root, causing pain that radiates down the back of your leg (sciatica).

Likewise, a pinched nerve in your wrist can lead to pain and numbness in your hand and fingers (carpal tunnel syndrome).  In a house, that copper wire we talked about may be surrounded by insulation as it runs its way to your lamp. Likewise a nerve may be wrapped in a neurovascular bundle, or NAV. This NAV is comprised of nerves, blood vessels and/or lymphatics, wrapped in connective tissue. Free electrons moving through the copper wire provide electricity. Likewise, electrochemical signals move through your nerves to and from their target destination.

Did you know the nerves actually affect those vessels increasing or decreasing blood flow? How do they do this? Imagine how much your nerves control your entire body!  Blood supplies nutrients to your organs and muscles. What happens when you are hungry? You need to eat. What happens when your organs and muscles are “hungry”? Yes, they need nutrition, as well. Blood flow carries these vital nutrients to where they need to go.

Scientifically, a pinched nerve may be called a radiculopathy. This is when a nerve may be compressed at the nerve root. Just like when a problem occurs where the wire in your house begins, the problem goes downstream, so to speak, to reduce electrical flow thus creating the flickering light.   We can say the pain radiates where the nerve travels downstream, as well. This problem may create a neuropathy. This is simply when a nerve doesn’t work right, and the problem travels downstream. Either way, with a radiculopathy or a neuropathy, the result can be painful.

What if the NAV is compressed and nutrients can’t supply the target muscle or organ?  That’s right, the organ or muscle starves, depending on how much the compression stops the flow.

Nerves are important since they feed you! Your internal body experiences “hunger” as many different symptoms. It can feel pain, fatigue, tight muscles or tension. Experiencing these symptoms is normal. To live with them isn’t. An effective solution exists.

What does a pinched nerve feel like? Have you ever hit your finger with a hammer? “Ouch! that hurts!” Is that what your nerve signals when it is pinched?

You feel it because it sends pain signals. Those signals are sent through afferent nerves, that go to your brain and spinal cord. Your brain and spinal cord process the signals and then through efferent nerves, the signal travels back to the place of pain, that pinched nerve, to tell you that your finger hurts.

Now what happens when that wire is compressed, or pinched? The light flickers. What do you have to do to get the light to stop flickering? Right! Straighten out the wire.   Pretty simple.  Have you ever had pain that would not go away and you didn’t know why? It might be a pinched nerve.

In your body, the pressure that was being exhibited on that nerve needs to be released. It needs to be unkinked; to have the pressure relieved. What does a chiropractor do? Yes, we  relieve the pressure. We do this by intelligent adjusting. That release feels good because the nerve now has an open energy flow from beginning to end.  How does this work in your house? When the wire is straightened out, then you have a continuous flow of light. The light stays on.

Have you ever tried to read a book with a flickering light? What happens? You get frustrated and maybe even, trying to concentrate, get a headache. Would you continue to read with this light flickering? Of course not.  So why would you live with a pinched nerve? The energy supply to your organs, blood vessels to those organs and muscles, is shutting down! It’s like reading a book with a flickering light. Frustrating, to your body, and if continues, may decrease muscle and organ functioning!

This “frustration” is interpreted as pain and discomfort.

After a while your organs and muscles may suffer because the nerves supplying these essential parts of your body are not getting the energy they need to thrive, and even survive. What happens? Atrophy occurs in muscles when you have not used them in a while. Decreased functioning may also occur on an internal level, when necessary energy is not received.

After a while that flickering light in your house, if energy is still decreasing, stays off longer than it’s on. What do you think happens in your body when a nerve remains pinched? Right! That organ or muscle continues to lose energy. Painful, isn’t it?

Conservative Approaches to a Herniated Disc

If your lumbar or cervical discs are herniated, you may not need surgery.  Typically, patients are advised to start with a course of conservative care before considering spine surgery for a herniated disc.  This is the preferred method, for most cases that do not include severe spinal conditions, to go about treating herniated discs.

Many conservative treatments include some sort of combination of options.  Occasionally, these options suggested by other doctors include pain medication.  Chiropractic treatment may include a variety of treatment options for herniated discs, but one of the main goals is to get the patient off of medication as soon as possible.  Chiropractic treatment for herniated discs include a few options, depending on your case and your chiropractor.
